Bar Worker Conversation

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

I haven’t posted anything substantial in a while because of lots of work coming in lately, but it’s Friday, so I’ll just offer a fun little story I forgot to talk about.

One of my old coworkers at the bar, who I originally called The Intern, has since joined the Marine Corps and I must say, he’s a better person for it.  His eating and sleeping habits are better, his posture has improved, and even his conversational rhythm has improved.  And what was once a scrappy skater kid from East LA is about to become an upstanding serviceman.  We–and by “we” I mean all of the bar staff–are all really proud of him.

A couple of weeks ago, he was on leave so he came to visit us in LA.  He hasn’t graduated at the Marine Corps yet, but military life has really helped to define who he is these days.  So instead of “The Intern”, I’m going to call him “The Cadet”.

One thing that hasn’t changed about him, though, is the way he brings up sex as a conversation topic when we form cigarette smoker circles outside of the bar.  Fortunately, I have known this about him for a long time, and in jabbing back at him verbally, I remembered how much fun it was to play off what he’s saying.

Cadet: Hey, the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s are releasing a full length or an EP this March?
Me: I’m pretty sure it’s a full length.  But it leaked way before, didn’t it?
Cadet: I should get that on iTunes.  And Karen O is so hot.
Me: You do have a thing for lead singers.
Cadet: Imagine if she did with your dick what she does with the microphone!  That’d be hot.
Me: No it wouldn’t — you’d have to tell her, “STOP YELLING AT MY PENIS!”

Ooh-rah.
