*sigh*

There goes $60+.

Dammit.

Jump In.

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Wow, I haven’t posted anything all week.

This is a short one, but I just wanted to plug the music magazine industry and the video game industry are having one steamy affair lately, and like any good networker, a handful of friends, coworkers, and I are heading out to mingle at this event:

Is anyone else going?

If you’re going, meet me at the bar.  I’ll be the drunk guy with the glasses and long black hair.

WANT.

I hope they’re not sold out by the time I get to a vendor after work today.

Have not been posting lately. Lots of thoughts. Not enough time to write them down. More soon. I hope.

Or maybe not, considering I’ll be spending time with this new game (prospectively).

Another Weekend in Sunny Southern California

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Things have been pretty busy lately. Been doing a lot of thinking, too. More on that possibly over the weekend. Haven’t even been paying attention to how nice the weather has been lately.

In the erstwhile, I’ve been enamored with this article on Kotaku, very rare that they do long-form, so enjoy while it lasts.

The Nerd In Me Says I Need This.

I already have the MLA/APA/Chicago Writing Reference Guides, I have the MLA Handbook, and I know when to employ them. I would do so religiously had I a good reason to actually do something with these – but video games are things I try to get to do every day (alright, every other day), and even more so I enjoy talking about them. So why wouldn’t I need this book? I really do need to know the answers to these questions:

  • Videogame; one word or two?
  • Console or system?
  • Xbox, XBox or X-box?
  • What defines a good game review?

I have no idea. And moreover, maybe “XBOX”?

Alright well maybe that isn’t as fascinating to you.

Here’s an acid-trip of work I can’t stop watching, by the brilliant Cyriak:

EEEEeeeeeexbox360!

Monday, February 18th, 2008

I just checked the repair status of my Xbox 360 and my account says that the unit has been repaired and has been shipped back to the customer! I’m the customer! It will be shipped back to me! The unit!

I’m sorry, I haven’t been this excited since purchasing the Orange Box. I’m going to throw a party. And there will be cake! Ok, I’m lying, there won’t be cake.

As excited as I am for getting my 360 back, this may be bad timing as my freelance work, especially in the Photoshop department (Hi Conrad!), has recently picked up. This time, it’s pro bono stuff for portfolio-ing, which I actually seem to enjoy more than the pressure of paid gigs.

And speaking of paid gigs, nobody told me that half of freelancing work is really just keeping it going. It’s seriously 40% actual work and 60% client-project management. One of these days, I’m going to ask some people to jump on this train and help me manage accounts and charge my clients because I am getting sick of explaining what I do, how much it will cost, then doing it, and then explaining what I’ve done, and explaining why what I’ve done costs [x] amount of money.

Does anyone (in the LA area) want to make a start-up? I’m thinking I may need some help here.

Happy Birthday, Legos

Thanks, Jeff Brown at EA. G4m3rs

Yes. YES.

Finally, Fox’s ill-informed smear campaign against Mass Effect is seeing some well deserved repercussions! For those of you that didn’t know about this skirmish, Fox accused Mass Effect of being lewd for having a sex scene in it, lambasting it for it being marketed to children and having full-frontal, interactive sex scenes.

And I quote Mr. Brown:

The resulting coverage was insulting to the men and women who spent years creating a game which is acclaimed by critics for its high creative standards. As video games continue to take audiences away from television, we expect to see more TV news stories warning parents about the corrupting influence of interactive entertainment. But this represents a new level of recklessness.

Do you watch the Fox Network? Do you watch Family Guy? Have you ever seen The OC? Do you think the sexual situations in Mass Effect are any more graphic than scenes routinely aired on those shows? Do you honestly believe that young people have more exposure to Mass Effect than to those prime time shows?

Thank you, Jeff Brown, for being the voice that we needed. As if it wasn’t bad enough that we nerds were bullied most of our lives that we are now seen by the condescending Fox News as perverts.

I will now purchase Mass Effect from my nearest local retailer in show of gratitude for someone finally standing up for us, whether or not I wanted the game in the first place.

Bricked

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

bricked
past and past participle of “brick”
1. adj. Condition of an electronic appliance or component when rendered ineffective or irreparable.

My Xbox 360 has been bricked. I’ve been stricken with the Red Ring of Death, and now have to send in my unit to get repaired. And that sucks because I love my 360, even though I suspected I was going to have this problem sooner or later.

That, and I hit an old lady with my car over the weekend.

“You what!?”

pedestrianIt’s true, though it’s not as bad as that one statement makes it seem. [edit]I’ve been notified to not talk about this with anyone until all’s settled with the insurance companies, so I had to block out a lot of this post’s original content.[/edit]

What I did want to say about this event was that it’s a strange sensation to think that insurance companies deal with human interactions after the interactions have taken place. In the days before insurance, one might have to take full responsibility to rectify transgressions; but not anymore. As the policeman told me, “That’s it. The insurance companies will take care of the rest.” Really? Nothing else? No sending her an apology card from Hallmark and fruit basket? Nope. Nothing. We pay insurance companies to talk to each other and to sort things out so that we can live and deal with the rest of our lives as humans. We pay these companies so that we can abdicate responsibility.

And that kind of detachment is a strange thing to feel when you’re young and you haven’t interacted much in the way of insurance companies.

Well, that was the bad part about my weekend. On the positive side, I did get to catch the movie Cloverfield, which I thought was pretty good.

Thanks.

I should really write down what transpired over the Thanksgiving break before I forget it completely; after all, this is the point of journaling, isn’t it?

Ok: video games. Most notably, my new love, Portal by Valve, and its theme song, “Still Alive” written by Jonathan Coulton (link party!).

What’s interesting about this game, too, that I’ve discovered, is that I share my enamored passion for an inanimate object with an entire community of gamers. The object I’m talking about is a cube, aptly named “Weighted Companion Cube.” Don’t believe me about this unreasonable obsession? From Wiki:

The game also generated a fan-following for the Weighted Companion Cube — while the cube itself doesn’t talk or act in the game, fans have created plush and papercraft versions of the “character”, as well as a MySpace profile, and a tribute website. Because of its popularity in the game, Valve’s Director of Business Development Jason Holtman has confirmed that a Weighted Companion Cube desktop toy will be released by the end of 2007. A Weighted Companion Cube plush and fuzzy dice will also be available through the Steam store.

I want one for Christmas.

Other events include eating beyond capacity, drinking some fine whiskey my cousin brought down from the Bay Area, and of course, catching up on some freelancing here and there. I also went to the Metropolitan cafe, the closest nice coffee joint to where I currently live, and it’s nice in there – I just wish it had more accommodating hours.

Family news include but are not limited to the experience that is aging. My oldest nephews/nieces are in freaking HIGH SCHOOL. I never thought it would freak me out, but it does.

Okay, well, back to work…
