Nightlife of the Dead

I know I talk a lot about working, and say things along the lines of: "hard work builds character" and "hard work is its own reward" and even "sleep is for suckers" -- but holy shit, the 50 hour workweek lifestyle really takes it out of you.

Some of you know what I'm talking about all too well. Teachers, programmers, and filmmakers are among the many occupations that get inordinate amounts of work at a time -- and this work doesn't come in waves, but in thunderous swells.

And then, well, you feel dead -- especially on the inside. A good indication that this gets to be a problem is that I am currently not flinching at the thought of strangling a koala.

That's not a euphemism for masturbation.

But just like how I believe sleep is for suckers, I also believe whining is for suckers. Sometimes, complaints get the response, well, what are you going to do about it?

What does any rational robot person do when faced with a problem?

You come up with a plan.

Sadly, prioritizing like this is going to remove video games from my activity list for a while. Which sucks because I really, really, really want BioShock 2...

One thing I'm excited to place in priority is blogging. I know that I hang out in the blogosphere in a really casual way, but I think it's about time I commit. And blogging, as a lot of people know, is a two way street. I've started to clock how long it takes to write a post, and next I'm going to figure out how long it takes to read and comment. Speaking of which, I'm overdue for returning the love people have given to this blog. As I feel I'm a largely unimportant person, it really does mean a lot to me that people even consider coming here.

Why do you guys even drop in here, anyway? All I talk about is work! ;)

I know the feeling. My first job out of college I was clocking 70-80 hour workweeks. It grinds you down after a while. I eventually left for a job that was around 50 hrs/wk, but it wasn’t much better as I was working on my MBA at the same time.

Time is precious and as a fellow gamer I can feel your pain. (Un)fortunately I’m currently unemployed so I’ve got a slight break from the rat race, but I know that as soon as get hired on I’ll be right back with you. It’s all about priorities and finding out what really matters in life…

  2. sleepyjane says:

    Cos we LOVES you! haha

Seriously, I admire you for it. And I think you’re just a *little* bit crazy but that’s neither here nor there. ;) At least you love it enough to spend so much time working, I’ve never had a job I loved that much and even that alone causes me some anxiety. You know, the whole WHAT AM I DOING WITH MY LIFE!? crisis.

Anyway – would love to see you around more, but first? Get some sleep. haha

  3. phampants says:

Blogging and YouTubing is a lot of work. But for me, I find it very relaxing

  4. Doni says:

Your take on work though – while you do talk about it – is this humble honesty that I think others of us who value our work and work ethics can identify with. You don’t bitch and moan about working hard, you acknowledge it, more importantly – you acknowledge that it is HARD and it SUCKS sometimes. But you know why you work and what you’re working for, and that’s the difference between you and me, and the people who work for the sake of work. Or money.

FWIW, I totally light up and get all excited when I see you have a new post.

  5. Matt says:

    I love koala’s –inside joke–

but did you know that koala’s arent even bears? they are fucking marsupials. So why do people insist on calling them koala bears?

it kind of makes me mad.

I dont even know what this comment means.

  6. Eric says:

You are a charming virtual teddy bear. That’s why I keep coming back.

  7. Courtney says:

Why do I keep coming back? Dude. You keep me sane.

    I mean, Dude, Come ON.

  8. stoodert says:

Because I want to have something to talk to you about when you come to my birthday party. :-p

  9. cari says:

because. you are NICOPOLITAN!! yeah, you don’t post or comment much, but when you do, it’s awesome. and because you send crazy long emails that lame people never respond to even though they say they’re going to. what’s not to love and want to know about nico?

and partly because i wait with eager anticipation the next installment of conversations with the muse.

I know how you feel. I always tell people that no matter how crazy busy things get in life, it’s really important to set aside a little chunk for something you love doing, otherwise you’ll burn out! (Although I find it very hard to follow my own advice lol) If blogging makes you happy (it’s a creative outlet! it’s one of my favourite hobbies, and it promotes thought, discussion, opinions, and networking with all sorts of lovely people, like you :)) and you don’t have time for it, what I do is get up half an hour earlier and use that for catching up and commenting on blogs, and then at work instead of taking lunch in the lunch room, I’ll write a blog post in Word every few days and preschedule, that way my evening time is free for other, RL stuff :)

  11. Sebastian says:

I keep coming back because I think it looks good, if someone Googles me, and they find I’m friends with an Asian.

  12. Ashley says:

Right now I’m working 55 hours a week with school on top of that, and while I can only think that I absolutely don’t want to spend the rest of my life working like that, there is a big part of me that enjoys it. There’s a lot to be desired–like, free time–and I sometimes get into this mood of thinking that no one understands what I’m going through!!!!!!!! (Maybe that’s why I come back to your blog) But, there’s also something kind of exciting and crazy about it too.

  13. Erini says:

I’m doing 44 hours. Most of which is with a person who has made it very apparent she’s not happy that in 3 months since starting here I’m now the Assistant Manager, and she’s been here for almost a year.

Anyway. Dude. Seriously. YOU ARE AWESOME. Hence why I come here. And keep my fingers crossed for a trip to sunny CA.
Plus, I need to keep checking to make sure you’re alive, you know, in case I kill my blog. ;)

  14. Kyla Roma says:

Ugh, no that diagram is all wrong! It’s “Time for freelance work?” “Paying Clients” THEN BioShock. I can understand why you’ve been frustrated! ;)

Blogging is tough- one of the things that I’m doing now that I’m really pressed for time is commenting on peoples blogs who comment on mine and just marking my reader as read. It’s not perfect but it takes the pressure off.

But I’m serious about BioShock. It’s so fucking pretty, Nico, it’s just silly!! =)

  15. molly says:

Because you’re hilarious and have a healthy perspective on life. And when you figure out the blogging timeframe, let me know because i need some major help in that dept.

  16. brad says:

Why stop by? Because you get it. And no, I’m not at all sure what “it” is. But I get the feeling that if I keep showing up here, I’ll find some clues.

Drop In, Say Hello.
