Overblog?

Series of Tubes

How many blogs is too many?

Like a lot of my peers, I'm interested in talking aimlessly and ad nauseam* on more than one subject.

Right, ok so why should that be a topic for an entire blog post? This has already been well established.

For some exposition, I already partitioned off my posts pertaining to musicianship and have placed them here, and that has turned out to be a good thing because it seems that as much as people like the idea of musicians, they don't care to hear about what it's like to be a musician -- or maybe more specifically, they don't care to hear me talk about it.  Moving my musicianship posts to a sub-blog has worked out for me surprisingly well, in that my online world got more organized but also it turns out there were listeners who didn't care to sort through my daily life to find what music I've written.

I'll probably reference musicianship here like I do since that actually is a part of my everyday life, but that's not necessarily the point of this blog. Besides, the more that I stuck with writing in this blog about life in general, or the internet in general, or general life on the internet, the more people were inclined to stick around.

Hypothesis: Talking about musicianship is niche, and writing entries that are more general can engage more people because slice-of-life stories are far more identifiable for the average blog reader than talking about how it took me hours to find a snare drum.

Moving on to talking about work: When I talk about the industry in which I work (interwebs - or specifically, social media), it sometimes interrupts the momentum of anecdotal story-telling, even if that is by and large a string of reminders to myself of what has happened in my social life amidst the fucking craziness of agency life (the kind of life where work follows you home).

The thing is, the anecdotes about working on the internet is its own set of stories, too. I chose social media as a career because it is, in fact, another thing about which I can rattle on and on for hours. However, I didn't need that to take over my entire personality, and in the same way, I probably shouldn't let it overrun this blog.

Enter the Research & Development Clippings blog.

Ah, that feels good to get out of the way. All of my career-related musings can now be found there unless I'll call it universal enough to drop in this main blog.

But this brings up a question I'd like to ask my fellow bloggers:

Do you try to keep life facets distinct from each other or do you mash it all up into one destination? And what are the other things in your life you do with enough passion to start another blog / site for it?

*Yes, that's how you spell it.

Aaaaand We’re Back.

Okay then!

First, I should draw attention to the fact that there was a bit of a redesign on this site (only graphically) to commemorate my switch from WordPress to WordPress MU. Why did I do that?  First, the switch is for research and development purposes, but also I can use it to consolidate different site ideas I’ve got, and to manage those ideas from one dashboard.  In other words: to learn something and also to facilitate dicking around.

I won’t get too much into the projects now because if you’re reading this, you’ll probably hear about it anyway.

Now, onward to more present matters:

It seems that according to all of the comments on the last post, I should make a video.  Really?  Ok, I’ll get to that, then.  In the erstwhile I’d like to knock out a couple of the following before I forget:

  • Pics of new apartment!
  • More stories of weird crap that’s been happening lately
  • Some neat projects I’m working on, and thoughts on those
  • Shameless promotion of my friends’ music (and mine, too)
  • Maybe another video blog?

Stories: Seeing as how a lot of events have long transpired since I got busy at work, the recap montage is thus:

  1. Discovered that I moved into an apartment in a big, red, house that was built in 1907, apparently once used as a motel back in the days of cowboys.  Yeehaw.
  2. Setting up shop in my room to work endless hours, effectively making my room an office that happens to have a bed in it. Becoming a zombie in the process.
  3. Work in the career is starting to show signs of a more “sane” workload, so I’m excited to finally set down to work on some overdue freelance obligations, who all seem to incidentally be in the creative fields.  In the sticky notes I have on my desk, I can already see that have some immediate work for:
    1. A screenwriter
    2. A mixed media artist
    3. A children’s book
    4. A local band
  4. Extracurricular activities:
    1. Threw a house party nearly every weekend since we moved in, and we’ve only been here for about a month. My liver believes I am his sworn enemy.
    2. VIDEO GAMES!  Oh, how I have missed these!  Been playing lots of Left4Dead and I am stoked for the sequel, and a game my roommate bought, Call of Juarez 2.  Apparently, zombies and cowboys have been running themes in this house lately.
    3. Been going to a number of shows lately, mainly supporting two friends who are close in the figurative and literal sense. In fact, tonight I will attempt to see two different shows for Tek Support in downtown LA and Zaptra in Hollywood.  I hope nothing goes wrong. And I hope I didn’t just jinx myself. I really don’t like the bar scene in Hollywood. I drive around in gridlocked traffic to pay money to park my car, to get out and stand in line, to pay money to get into a venue, to drink expensive drinks alone because everyone seems to be afraid of strangers.  Why is it that Hollywood is the only neighborhood in LA that does this?  I guess going to Hollywood for a show is jinxing myself to begin with.
    4. Been working with my roommate on this project (stoked on this!).
    5. My roommate and I also have been slowly putting together a disaster preparedness kit, and I’m surprised I hadn’t owned one before.  Frankly, everyone should own one. However, ours seems to be more focused on surviving the zombie apocalypse than it is focused on surviving natural disasters.  Regardless, when we find things we can put in it, we aptly call it the “OH SHIT!” box.
    6. Been back in the swing of regular rehearsals and songwriting. Ahhh, that feels good to say.

Alrighty, I think I covered all of the important stuff.  Note that “important stuff” here refers to things I myself would like to remember since my memory is worse than something-with-really-bad-memory.

I think we’re done with lists for the time being. What a relief!  I miss writing in journal form.

Video coming soon.

Can We Go Home Now?

If you are asking yourself this,
at least you’re not thinking,

“OMG already???
I need more time to finish this!”

Boredom can be zen
compared to the manic
batshit craziness
of stress.

When It Rains, It Pours

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

Of course, it really doesn’t ever rain all that much in Los Angeles except for that one time in 1938, but when I said work was picking up, I wasn’t kidding — and it hasn’t yet settled down.

Will be in-and-out of reach on the interwebs for a short while.  Just some notes on things you should expect from me upon return:

  • Pics of new apartment!
  • More stories of weird crap that’s been happening lately
  • Some neat projects I’m working on, and thoughts on those
  • Shameless promotion of my friends’ music (and mine, too)
  • Maybe another video blog?

Which one should I do first?

Ok, back to work.

Multiple Nicopolitan Disorder

Monday, September 14th, 2009

Muse: Hey, what happened to Nico?  I haven’t heard from him in a while.

Shadow Nico: Omagad, it’s been batshit crazy.

Muse: What? Really?

Shadow Nico: Nico’s been working 24/7 and skipping sleep to pull off 36 hour work shifts, and in the very brief spats of time to himself, he drinks shit tons to get to sleep and on the weekends he tags along to weird shows and situations and birthday parties with ambulances–

Muse: What. The. Hell.

Shadow Nico: I’m telling you, shit’s been nuts.

Muse: I hope he’s okay.

Shadow Nico: Pfft.  He’s fine.  Just fucking crazy.

Muse: You swear a lot.

Shadow Nico: I’m still drunk.

Muse: Does that mean Nico is drunk?

Shadow Nico: He’s at work so I’m assuming that’s a no, but we’ll know as soon as he takes a break from working.

Muse: When does he stop working?

Shadow Nico: Technically speaking, motherfucker never stops working.

Muse: Profound.

Shadow Nico: Shit’s fucked up, that’s what that is.

Muse: You should really watch your language.

Shadow Nico: And you could use a tall glass of Shut-The-Fuck-Up!

Muse: Dude, what the hell is your problem?

Shadow Nico: Nothing.  I’m sorry.

Muse: Jesus.

Shadow Nico: Bitch.

Muse: What?

Shadow Nico: Nothing.

Spun

Life’s been a whirlwind lately!  Career work is picking up, funding is low because of moving so I have to figure out some more freelance gigs while I work on the ones already roped in, gotta get more settled in the new apartment, gotta get my car’s oil changed, gotta get groceries, gotta pay traffic tickets, gotta change my bills to paperless statements, gotta move my amps to the new rehearsal space and re-string my guitars and stop being out of practice–

In general, I just gotta get shit together.  And interestingly, nothing in this mess through which I find myself wading is bad (except for the low funding part).

So while I figure that out, could somebody update me on what all my favorite bloggers are doing?  I haven’t had much time to read, sorry.

*hint: if you’re reading this or even know about me, you are most likely one of my favorite bloggers.  What have you been up to?
