See Ya Later, 2008(…er…?)

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

So the year ends.  What of my goals from last New Year’s have I accomplished?

  • Gave up cigarettes
  • Gave up caffeine
  • Lost weight
  • Found true love
  • Learned a new programming language
  • Released an album
  • Read more books

…Okay, well that’s not so bad.  It is 0/6, but check out what I’ve done inadvertently:

  • Moved, three times
  • Met new people, made new friends
  • Vacationed in Brooklyn
  • Met some amazing writers via teh intarwebz
  • Got a new job
  • Re-learned how to sing
  • Started a new band
  • Staffed a booking company
  • Read more blogs

That last one has actually been a significant part of my life for the past year, and I have everyone in my FeedReader to thank for it.

So ’09′s resolution?  To give back to the awesomeness of the internet.  Somehow.  To figure out how to give back.  And to do it often.

Why?  Because the internet is the digital manifestation of a collective imagination, and it’s thanks to everyone I’ve been reading that I still have an imagination, that I have not been crushed by corporate life, and that I remain a dreamer — and dreaming, especially dreaming big, is very important to me.

So thank you, webtubes.

I’ll work on paying you back in full starting tomorrow.

As far as year-end recaps go, here’s my favorite:

Whatever happened to that Nico guy?

I’m alive, I swear.

As mentioned, I’m having trouble getting Internet set up at my new digs (but it’s so close I can taste it!), so I’m blogging from my iPhone. The web access from previous post has been recently shut off because its owner, the lady living one floor above me, kind of doesn’t know how it works.

Can those of you who actually read this blog Twitter me (@nicopolitan) what’s been going on in blogland? I feel like I’ve been living under a rock.

And no, it does not rock.

Buhbye, Roomie

It’s thanks to my roommate for the past handful of weeks that I have a new job, new place to sleep, and a giant reset on my life.  And now, she is moving to NYC to work in our company’s Manhattan office, and I know she deserves it because she’s been due for something this good for a long time.

Here she is in something I Photoshopped (on the right):

Ah, man, good times.  I’m gonna miss this lady.

Godspeed in the Big City, Puppet.

Full Moon

Friday, December 12th, 2008

Me: It’s a full moon out tonight.
Bar Patron: You know what that means?
Me: What?
Bar Patron: It means the crazies are out.
Me: I’d say that’s a safe bet.
Bar Patron: Would you consider yourself a crazy?
Me: a-yay-us.

Last night I went to the 10 year anniversary company party for the company I left no more than a couple of weeks ago.  I didn’t go to crash it; in fact, I was never un-invited, but two days ago I was re-invited just to reaffirm the point that I was welcome to the shindig.

And it was worth it to go.  Just to make sure the air was cleared and to make sure everyone knew I wasn’t going to leave them in the lurch.  I made some good friends at that company and I don’t intend to completely bail on them.

la_rail_mapThe night started out as a walk from my house to the nearby Metro station.  Now, keep in mind I live in LA, so driving is the transportation of choice.  But because I planned to get sincerely drunk it was my responsibility to find some other way to get there.

It turns out the Metro is fine as long as you’ve got the wherewithal to read goddam map.  I am really considering using this for my daily commute since I live close to a Metro stop and most of the places I need to get to are also close to Metro stops.  Easily a sign that I should give this a go.

They say nobody walks in LA.  Well, I am to become a nobody.  (Ring a bell?)

Okay, maybe that last reference was way too lit-nerdy but I’m going to run with it.  I know Eric would get it.

What I didn’t expect in waiting to board the first train is that I would be approached by two separate pairs of punk rockers who invited me to a show in Boyle Heights for tonight.  Both pairs were very young.  The pair of guys were cool and gave me hope for the future of LA bands, and the pair of girls provided some cutesy conversation.  I’m not going to go because I already planned to attend another show, but my interactions with them reminded me of how I used to be that young and energetic about getting the word out about shows my friends were playing.  Old school word of mouth, uber-friendly, and in person.  And the icebreaker was always: “Hey man, can I bum a smoke off you?”

The actual Metro trip itself was fine other than the Purple line breaking down temporarily on 7th.  But nobody made a comment openly about it.  Everyone was strangely politely quiet.  That would never happen in New York.

The party itself was nice.  It was bittersweet because I knew I was going to miss cracking jokes every day with those people.

Fortunately for me, I’m still in contact with a lot of that company and it’s way friendly.  No burned bridges.  And though I can’t crack the same kinds of jokes in this new office, shit tons of funny things happen in this new office, so I’m not at a loss, just at a different angle.

The cab ride home was very nice.  Cabbie was a musician in the 70′s and early 80′s, and we had a long talk about how scenes change in LA, and how real musicianship is not a means to an end (like money, fame, sponsorships, and reality TV gigs).  Musicianship is an end in and of itself.  It just feels right to strum a guitar.

At the end of this story I still can’t help but feel that whole experience of taking public transportation and seeing a bunch of familiar faces I haven’t seen in a handful of weeks was just straight up weird.  Good, but weird.

That could be the hangover talking.

WOAH.

Have all my self-hosted WordPress friends upgraded to the new version? 2.7 is really easy on the eyes and noticeably faster.

This was written in the new little “QuickPress” area, which is an instant-post tool in the main dashboard probably created in light of the micro-blogging movement (*ahem* Twitter).

We’ll see what problems I may run into while breaking it apart on purpose like I usually do, but in the interim: I dig, WP folks. I dig.

Quick Learner

As it turns out, this new job makes perfect sense to me.  And that surprises me, because I expected the training to take a long time.  Granted, I won’t be given a campaign on my own without a coworker holding my hand through it, but the processes for getting shit done seem to be really very intuitive.  And moreover, the team seems to be extra-willing to help, because I’m getting the impression that the last thing they want is for someone to screw something up — an indication of a shared interest in doing well.  As for the work itself, it seems that preparing and reporting are generally universal tenets as far as the marketing industry goes.  The only differences here are the prettier, more in-depth reports, which will just take more time to finish than what I’m used to.  No biggie.  And I’m happy to do it, because a better looking report reflects on you as a person.

I feel like I’m not asking enough questions, but I really don’t have very many yet.  I wouldn’t call the processes “simple” but they’re not in any way beyond my grasp.  This sounds conceited — but to put it in analogous terms, it’s like when you rehearse for a huge gig because you’re afraid to screw up, and then the show goes completely fine.

As far as the people go, it’s really easy to get along with people here.  I like how everyone has been warning me to the effect of “you might be shocked with what is said in this office!” Eg., Risqué! Inappropriate! Crass! Dude, I work on the internet.  Nothing is over-the-top.  But at least I much prefer this environment over some of the uptight environments I’ve been a part of in the past.

Moving and Shaking

Short post just to let anyone who is actually paying attention know I’m still alive and well.

I’m still in the middle of the move and for some reason thought it would be a good idea to express how much I miss regular routine — you know, the one that lets me read my favorite blogs in the morning.

Damn I miss Lifehacker.

But I’m planning on getting internet at this new place hooked up by the end of the week, if all goes well.

BBL.  lolz.  In the meantime, check out this completely irrelevant but awesome nonetheless Wiki article.
