The Nicopolitan Glossary

Tuesday, December 19th, 2006

I realize that I use terms with which general readers may not be familiar (after all, this blog is public), so I’m going to link to this post over there on the right side of the page.

    Nicopolitanese

  • APOB – An acronym for “A Patch of Black”, which is the first half of the whole band name, “A Patch of Black in a riot of color.” This was a band in which I played guitar during college; members of this group formed splinter projects (Milk:Blood, Calligraphite, Dustpanic, Rival Sandwich Company, etc.) as well as founded the booking company, The Cocaine.
  • BCNM – An acronym for “Burning Circle Notorious Monster,” a term used to identify a kind of campaign in Final Fantasy XI, after which the band was named. “The Band,” or alternatively, “my band,” refers to a musical group in which I currently play drums.
  • Cocaine, The – Eye-catchingly identifiable with the narcotic of the same name, it is also the name of my immediate employer for booking and stage management. It is the in-house booking company, formed by Johnnie Munger, that serves Live Jazz.
  • Live Jazz – A bar in Los Angeles’s Little Tokyo, at which I am part-time employed (mostly during weekends) as an event coordinator (booking), sound tech, stage manager, and soon, webmaster. It is also formally (not ‘formerly’) recognized as 2nd St. Jazz. We call it “Live Jazz” because that is what reads on the only visible neon sign from the street.
  • My Music – refers to the music I write independently, which is electronic and guitar based, as well as cheaply executed.
  • Oxy – Abbrev. for “Occidental College,” my alma mater. And no, you’re not clever when you make fun of the name of this college. That is, unless you can first tell me what “Occidental” means. In that case, I grant you full license to poke fun.
  • Work – Refers to my (surprisingly enjoyable) day job at an internet marketing company; and no, not a spam/popup company. Believe me, we hate those, too.

EDIT:

Mahea has brought attention to another important definition in the Nicopolitan lexicon: Read Shakespeareverb 1. To smoke pot. Why did I forget this word? The reason is probably obvious.

My Ears Are Ringing

Monday, December 18th, 2006

And this isn’t just because I have a slight case of Tinnitus, but because of Intronaut welcome home show which took place at our venue. Damn. In all senses of the word.

On a different note, it’s also pretty frigid out for Los Angeles. People tell me that here in Los Angeles we are such wusses about cold weather, but they forget that we do not own winter clothing. Let’s see you go outside in your winter with only jeans, shirts, and a hoodie.

And I’m not going to keep going on about this since I don’t want my blog to be judged on the analogies I am able to generate. “It’s ______er than a ________” is so overdone. What ever happened to metaphors?

. . .

In other recent news, I have purchased the MacBook (regular, not Pro) that I’ve been saving up for sometime to get. My only question about this is if there’s a good audio program that is comparable to Steinberg Wavelab for PC? I swear to God, if I hear one more person recommend freaking Garage Band I will ________ _______er than a ________.

How Was Your Weekend?

Sunday, December 10th, 2006

…is a common question in most workplaces during small talk. In some workplaces, Instant Messaging is also an appropriate way to have this conversation — companies where access to the internet is vital to getting stuff done.

So to prepare for this being asked at the place where I work, I have detailed these events here so that I can cut and paste them into message windows.

    Saturday is cursed

  • Failed booking for Saturday for the first time in a long time. This process came from a series of wave after wave of cancellations due to extenuating circumstances. Drummers got put in jail, tour vans got stolen, people left town, bands got double booked, and to top it off, it started raining.
  • Friends of mine got into an accident on the 110 leaving our bar. Truck got totalled.
  • Met some new friends after we transported them to a warm, dry, place to stay awake and wait for the parking garage down the street from our venue to open. Their car got locked in. I hope those girls got home safely.
  • At least band rehearsal was good. There’s a silver lining. Especially how much our guitarist got electrocuted, that was pretty cool.
    Sunday is not as cursed

  • It’s wet. I like to smoke cigarettes in this weather, though. Not in the rain, just near it.
  • Helped a good friend and fellow musician clean up some code for his web page
  • Found some time to hang out with more friends and also get more work done on the ‘net

The Times!

Friday, December 1st, 2006

I was in the LA Times yesterday! Go me and all the hard work I’ve put into this since June!

And go Johnnie, too, for it was his progeny even though now I have custody.
